Homework

I love it when others come to visit me. They sit on me, or in me. They can stand in me too. I have thousands of brothers and sisters all over the world. I am a lovely shade of cream-white. I am porcelain, yet I have brothers and sisters who are made of plastic, and in the olden days they were made of cast iron. I have funny pipes running through my walls. They bring water of hot and cold for my human friends to use.

Some of my brothers and sisters have even funnier pipes then I. Sometimes they have so many pipes that there a little holes all over them where hot water constantly gushes out onto the humans who love them. I don't think I would like that, but I bet my human friends would.

I have thousands of little cousins, too. We Bigs like to look out for our little ones. So we make sure that for every one of us, there is a little cousin near at hand. They are lucky though. I have never seen one made of plastic like some of my shorter-lived brothers and sister. Some of them are even made of steel! And a lot of them must be very brave, because they must weather the harsh world without our guidance. Although they do seem to congregate an awful lot in public resting places. But in the big rooms where there is a lot of noise and heat and wonderful smells, they (for the most part) must endure alone. So sad.

I think my human friends take me for granted. But that's ok. I don't mind. They keep me company sometimes, and they usually keep me very clean. I have had many human friends. I have seen them through lots of events. I have seen them sick of other humans, sick of themselves, or just plain sick to their stomaches. I even got to help one of my friends have a baby once. She gripped my sides so hard I thought she was going to crush them. And she screamed so loud I thought she would burst her own pipes. I watched her young one grow, and when they left, others came so that I may take care of them as well.

Sometimes I wish I was different though. Sometimes I wish I was made of cast iron. I wouldn't let the water that fills me up sometimes get cool too quickly. Humans could come, and lay down in me, under the water, and feel fresh and clean when they leave. I would love to have the cute clawed feet that they have. Then the humans four-legged, long-tailed, fuzzy friends could come and lie under me when I am full nice hot water, and our human companion is luxuriating in the warmth.

Ah...To be cast iron. It is the dream of all my brothers and sister. Maybe someday, when we grow old, that is what we shall become.

:-)
