Homework

Characters

Michael, 16

Tonya, 19

Time

The present, late evening

Place

In the kitchen of their parents home.

There are suitcases near the back door, the sink is full of dishes. The counters are cluttered with various cooking items. A folded newspaper on the table, and two mugs of foaming apple juice are on the table as well (simulating beer).

As the lights come up we see Michael sitting at the kitchen table nursing his beer. Tonya, meanwhile, is pacing the length of the room, her beer is untouched on the table. She keeps glancing at the baggage by the door.

Michael

I just don't understand why you're so upset about this.

Tonya

How long have they been together?

Michael

(sighing)
That's hardly the point and you know it...

Tonya

But they seemed so happy! Does Billy know? He's only ten for God's sake! How could they do this to him? To us for that matter?

Michael

Aren't you being a bit self centered? Have you thought about what they've been going through? No, I would imagine not.

Tonya

(Sitting down next to him)
You just don't know what it'll do to him...

Michael

And what will it do? Huh? He may not know, but he has been suspecting, like me, that this would happen. Where have you been for the last five years? Off in la-la land with your goody two-shoes friends. You don't even know whats been happening here, and you still live here for Christ's sake! Believe me, it will be better in the long run.

Tonya

(Firmly)
How can you say that? They're happy...

Michael

Obviously not...

He stands, and without looking at her, leaves the room. Dim lights.
