"Sarah!" Hollers the woman with a bright and shining face.
"Aunt Bet." Sarah says. Bet rushes up to them and embraces both woman in a warm bear hug. She turns her humor-filled, brown eyes to Jinny.
"And is that me baby Jinny? My, my, my." She looks Jinny up and down, noting how her face turns a lovely shade of pink. "Now, haven't you matured into quite the looker!"
"Thank you, Aunt Bet." Jinny replies, overwhelmed by the attention. Jinny thinks to herself that she doesn't remember Bet liking women like that before. But, ya know what they say..."The barn door swings both ways." Or, that's what dear old Ma used ta say, wonder what she would think if she saw me now...
"Don't you have someone to go home to?" Sarah asks with a malicious twist to her lips.
"Why, yes I do...and he can't wait to see you girls! So, lets be off then, huh?" Bet returns, winking at Jinny.
Sarah rolls her eyes for the second time today, picks up her backpack and follows Bet to her old pickup truck. Sarah and Jinny dump their gear into the back of the truck and climb into the cab. It's a tight squeeze with the three of them in there, but none of them seem to mind.
Since Jinny had silently asked for the window seat, Sarah is stuck between her and Bet. Jinny seems to be engrossed by the scenery passing them by. She watches as they pass field after field of pasture land. Interspersed with tall trees. She seems almost awed by the beauty of it all,, Sarah thinks. Sarah, on the other hand, has seen it all before. The cows are nothing new for her, the corn is an old thing. She sits back and tries to relax, just watching the road that they travel.
"We're almost there now," Bet says, glancing to Sarah and Jinny. Jinny doesn't respond, still watching everything they pass. Sarah just nods her head in acknowledgment.
They eventually pull into the long driveway leading to Bet's house. Jinny is truly awed now, as the driveway is lined with trees that reach up over head and touch branches in the middle to create a type of tunnel way for the truck. At the end of the driveway is the largest house Jinny has ever visited. She thinks that it must be some kind of mansion, while Sarah thinks of it as a large, but run down, farm house. Jinny never notices that the old paint is pealing or that the roof is missing a slate tile or five. She just thinks that it will be a wonderful vacation after all. I know I said I wanted to do this, but I didn't think that we would actually come out here. I guess it really won't be too bad after all.
They pull up in front of the house, and everyone gets out. Sarah and Jinny grab their bags from the back of the pickup, and head towards the house.
"Sarah, dear," Bet says behind them. "You can have your old room dear. There should be more then enough room for the two of you in there!" She begins to head toward the nearest barn, then turns back. "Oh! Mike won't be home for a couple of hours, so you girls make yourselves some dinner. I'll be in shortly!" She waves, and then is off.
Sarah leads Jinny up to her old room. When they get there they find that there are new linens on the bed, and fresh soap and towels in the private bath.
Sarah sits down on the bed, absently smoothing the comforter when she sighs.
"What's wrong with you?" Jinny asks. "I thought you would be happy to be here!"
Sarah looks up into Jinny's eyes.
"I am happy," She replies. "I was just thinking about my mom."
"Oh, you mean Miss 'You should go out and find yourself a good man' Mom?"
"Yup, that is the only one I had, you know." Sarah replies with dripping sarcasm.
"Well," Jinny says, pushing Sarah onto her back. "She just never found the right woman now did she."
Sarah breaks into a smile. She grabs Jinny by the wrists and pulls her down.
Downstairs, Bet smiles to herself as she hears Sarah and Jinny giggling while trying out the new mattress that she had bought specially for them.
To be continued...
