Sarah waits at the door as she listens to Jinny clatter down the stairs.
"Come on, woman!" She hollers. "We're gonna miss the bus if you don't get down here quick."
Jinny jumps the last couple steps, staggers and then hitches her backpack higher on her shoulders.
"How much did you pack in there? Sheesh, you'd think we were leaving for good!"
Jinny glares at Sarah for a moment, then breezes past her and out into the street.
Sarah shakes her head and wanders out after her companion. Once out on the sidewalk Sarah notices what a beautiful day it is. She looks up at the sky and sees that it is very blue. She can swear that she feels a cool breeze, but she figures that it is just from the passing cars. No real breeze comes down this ally, she thinks.
They walk to the bus terminal a couple blocks away and prepare to go to Nowhere, New Jersey. Sarah can see that Jinny is trying very hard not to laugh as she looks at her ticket. She could never understand what was so terribly funny about the name Nowhere. It has always seemed very suitable to the town. It is, in fact out in the middle of no where.
After stowing their gear in the compartments in the bottom of the bus, they get on the bus and look for a couple of good seats. Sarah thinks that there are no really good seats on a bus, but at least this one looks fairly well cleaned. They sit down about half way back, and Jinny demands the widow seat. Sarah rolls her eyes and sighs. She's just in one of her moods I guess, she thinks.
After what seems like hours, the driver starts the beast up and they pull out of the parking lot. He cruises at a good pace through the city, both women praying for thier lives as he almost slams into a small ice cream truck. Eventually the rocking of the bus and the tension from worrying about the driver put both Sarah and Jinny to sleep.
Sarah is awakened by a rough hand on her arm. She pushes herself to an upright position, squinting at the strange man hovering over her and Jinny. He isn't a pleasant man, all hard, and gray haired. His mustache is stained with nicotine. His breath is rancid. He looks both women over very carefully before speaking.
"Got to get off now." He rumbles, adjusting his belt.
Sarah stares at him, panic widening her eyes.
"Bus ain't goin' no farther." He says, stepping back.
Sarah looks out the window to see that they are in fact in the bus terminal about an hour ride from Nowhere.
"Of course," She replies.
He walks away shaking his head while she bends over to Jinny.
"Sweetness? Jin, it's time to go, love." She whispers into Jinny's ear.
"Mmmbbmblllmmeee." Is Jinny's response.
"Jinny!"
Jinny bolts upright rubbing her eyes and trying to look like she had never been sleeping.
"I'm up I'm up I'm up!" She groans, then looks out the window. "Where are we?"
"We're 'bout an hour from Nowhere." Sarah replies.
"You can say that again." Jinny mumbles.
"Hey! This was your idea Miss Thang. Now get up and let's go call Aunt Bet." Sarah says as she walks toward the front of the bus.
Jinny sighs and moves off the bus. What the hell was I thinking! she thinks to herself.
Together, they grab their stuff and head to the only building in sight. Off on their way to call Sarah's Aunt Bet.
To be continued...
