Homework

"I was surprised by your invite." Jenny states as she plops into a chair across the table from John.

He looks up from the book he's reading, squinting in the noon sunlight.

"Well, I was in town and we need to talk." He says.

Jenny looks around the outside dining area. Smiling as she watches folks have their meals. She ducks as a waiter rushes by with a full try of food and drinks.

"It sure is busy today, huh?" She looks back to him, then glances away to watch cars speed along the narrow street.

"Jenny, this is important..."

"Everything is important to you." She snaps, not bothering to look at him. "Everything except me that is." She sighs.

"Damn it! Why must you be so self-absorbed?" He exclaims.

"Well," Distractedly, she turns to watch a couple at another table as they bolt down their lunches.

"Your sister called me when she couldn't find you." He sighs. "It's about your mother..."

"Alright, why the hell did you get me up in the middle of the night?" Jenny asks as she sits across from him.

John looks up from his paperwork to stare at her.

"No one is up at midnight anymore. Why can't you keep a normal schedule like everyone else?" She looks around herself pointedly.

John looks around, and notices that they are all but alone in the outdoor dining area. A single waiter loiters by the restaurant door, obviously bored.

"Well, I was in town and we have to talk." He states.

"Damn it, don't you think about anyone else? Couldn't this have waited until morning?"

"No, this has waited too long as it is." He replies. "Your sister called me when she couldn't find you..."

"Oh there's a shocker! You spent more time with her then you ever spent with me when WE were together!" She begins to stand, and he grabs her arm.

"Jenny, it's about your mother..."
