"That's the biggest elephant I've ever seen!"
"Johnny!" Monica exclaimed, "You will not talk of my sister that way. Need I remind you that she is your aunt? You are to be respectful to your elders. Get away from the window and stand by me."
"Well she shouldn't be wearing that grey tent then, should she?"
"I will NOT tolerate you poking fun at our relatives in my presence."
"Then I'll do it by myself!" He turns to walk away.
"No! You will stand right here and greet her at the door with me." She stares off toward the front door. "Why must you be an impudent whelp right now? Can't you be more like your sister was at your age? Your aunt is sick...you had best be nothing but courteous to her."
"But Mom..."
"No! I have had my say, and you will do as you're told. You're 13 years old now, it's time to start acting like an adult for a change."
"Yes mother."
"Don't you dare start using that tone on me young man." She growls.
"Why, whatever could you mean, mother?"
She sniffs and turns away. Opening the door for her eldest sister. For a moment she stops to catch her breath. I guess he's right, she thinks. She really does looks like an elephant in that dress.
NOTE: This was an assignment for my CCV Creative Writing I online class with William Noble.
