Homework
Simon can just hear it over the noise of the TV. A sound like the rumble of thunder that just won't roll away into the distance. It is a sound that she had heard before, and has dreaded hearing again. She can feel the trembling of the ground. The vibrations growing as she gets to her feet. The sounds of glass breaking and wood being sundered by the massive heaving of the earth race to her ears. She is almost to the doorway.
The doorway means safety, or at least that is what she had been told. She will find out soon enough.
Finally she is able to get to the doorway, and just as she does the world goes black around her. The lights are out. Nothing but darkness is there for her to see, and nothing but the heaving ground is there for her to hear. Her heart races and sweat springs out onto her face. She can feel the doorway twist under the strain of the old house
Suddenly, there are popping sounds all around her. The floor buckles under her feet and she is thrown away from the doorway. She lies on the floor, paralyzed with the thought that she will die so soon. She can hear the walls ripping around her. She can feel clouds of dust rising from the floorboards under her cheek.
A sudden crack over her, and something heavy lands on her back knocking the wind out of her. She tries to breathe but the weight on her does not budge enough to draw ample breath. The darkness becomes pitch black as she fades from consciousness.
NOTE: This was an assignment for my CCV (Community College of Vermont) Creative Writing I online class with William Noble.
